Techno Boffin is partially correct – improving your web site, adding quality content, improving your site structure etc. will all help improve your sites ranking however “On page optimisation” as this is known will never be enough to get to the first page of Google for any sensible phrases or keywords without link popularity.  Most decent web design companies and even entry level search engine optimisation companies should be able to handle the “on page” work (although it never ceases to amaze me how many get this wrong).  Very few web design companies can handle link strategies and without this element you will never be on the first page of Google.

We often find web design companies take on a client’s SEO work because they are frightened of losing them as a customer which is a real shame.  Quality web design is an art in itself and web designers should specialise in what they do best just as SEO companies should specialise in search engine optimisation.
