I say you should beware of any company that won’t guarantee their work!

Technically Mr Techno Boffin is correct, it is very difficult to guarantee first page positions on Google because there are so many factors out of your control that can affect the results.  However if you are an SEO company and you are selling SEO then you shouldn’t be doing so unless you know you can deliver results.  The only thing you should be uncertain of is how long it will take.  If you are dealing with Blue Chip Companies then time is less of a factor as they can afford to wait for results however when you are dealing with small to medium sized businesses time is critical and so I believe that any company offering SEO in this sector should commit to results and a realistic time frame and if they don’t achieve it within this time frame it should hurt their pocket - they should share in the pain (certainly focuses the attention and activity).
